PSAT 8/9

All Tri-Valley freshmen are offered the opportunity to take the PSAT 8/9 (a practice SAT designed for the freshman level) in the spring when juniors take the SAT.

The 2019-2020 PSAT 8/9 test day will be on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020.

The PSAT 8/9 establishes a baseline measurement of college and career readiness as students enter high school. It helps students and educators determine what students need to work on most. The test emphasizes the meaning of words in extended contexts and on how word choice shares meaning, tone, and impact. Students are not penalized for guessing.

The total test takes 2 hours and 25 minutes to take:
  • Reading Component: 55 minutes to answer 42 questions/tasks
  • Writing and Language: 30 minutes to answer 40 questions/tasks
  • Math: 60 minutes to answer 38 questions/tasks

The test is scored out of 1440, with a reading and writing/language subscore out of 720 and a math subscore out of 720. Scores are further broken down to specific test scores and key content scores so students are able to pinpoint what they need to work on.
